Anxiety and depression have become a twenty first century problem in the western world. It’s fair to say that these conditions are responsible for the vast majority of mental ill health in most people. By creating a calming atmosphere and with the healing benefits of skin to skin contact, this therapy can alleviate some of the symptoms of instances of anxiety and depression. A person's overall wellness can be improved.
Human touch, in a way that is safe and professional can be incredibly therapeutic, soothing, nurturing and relaxing. It also helps to include visualisation exercise throughout massage where you would picture yourself in pleasant surroundings of your choice.
Massages are known to alleviate stress all around – in your muscles and mind. Quite often stress tends to manifest in the shoulders and neck. Did you know that neck massage boosts blood flow? Even a simple hand massage can lower your blood pressure and heart rate. And it also significantly lowers levels of the stress hormone CORTISOL.
By reducing stress hormones and lowering blood pressure the body is better able to target its immune response to ward off disease or infection more efficiently.
Relaxation massage relaxes the client and provides relief from stress and the feeling of calm, which can help a person fall asleep more quickly, sleep more deeply and be less disturbed during sleep. Massage therapy also relieves postural stress and localised pain so that a person will find it easier to sleep more comfortably.
Many of us have dealt with some kind of postural stress. More advanced forms of which tends to show up as pain or weakness in the lower back and gluteal muscles. This is usually caused by prolonged periods of sitting, especially associated with desk based jobs. Massage can counteract the imbalance caused from sitting – as long as you schedule a regular massage appointments. Massages are not here to replace medical treatment, they are here to enhance your state of mind and help your body in many ways.
It was also found that massage boosts patient’s white blood cell count which plays a big role in defending the body from disease. Massage doesn’t just get the blood flowing – it actually changes your blood’s composition for the better. After just 45 minute Swedish massage (a technique that involves long strokes, deep kneading and circular movements to push blood toward the heart) recipients had significantly higher levels of blood proteins that play major role in protecting the body from tumours, viral infections and other pathogens.
Did you know that studies found, on average, massage therapy increases your levels of SEROTONIN (a neurotransmitter linked to happiness) by 28 percent and DOPAMINE (a neurotransmitter involved in motivation, arousal and reward) by 31 percent. Combined, this boost should pretty much make your day regardless of how miserable the weather is outside. Studies have shown that massage will leave you feeling totally happy.
Trust the science…
There are a number of factors that can trigger a headache but the main cause comes from tension in the neck that restricts blood flow to the brain. If you get chronic headaches or migraines, first, make sure you tell your doctor because it may be associated with something else. Once you have seen the doctor and you already know the reason why you get these headaches and are just looking for a more natural way to manage them, then massages are your new best friend.
Next time you get a headache, definitely try booking a last minute massage because it has been proven that massage decreases frequency and severity of tension headaches. Studies also found that people who get two 30 minute massages a week had less chronic headaches.
Research shows that if you have gone or are undergoing chemotherapy for cancer or any other intense treatment for an illness, you should introduce a massage into your life. It also can reduce the instances of nausea in patients.
Fibromyalgia, also called fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS), is a long-term condition that causes pain all over the body. There's no cure for fibromyalgia, but treatments like painkillers, talking therapies and exercise programmes may help ease some of your symptoms.
One of the best treatments for fibromyalgia sufferers is to receive massage therapy. Such therapy helps people get calf pain relief, decreases their stress hormones, and increases their serotonin level. With these benefits, it improves the overall sense of well-being.
Did you know that a 30 minute massage a week can improve your trunk flexibility and relieve the pain associated with lower back stiffness. According to a study by neuroscientists, it will help you to enjoy the intimate positions too. You may want to suggest to your partner that massage is “a gift that gives back ”.
Miami based Touch Research Institute’s executive director Tiffany Field discovered that massage therapy can improve ADHD symptoms in teenagers. Adults, who received a regular massage for 10 consecutive days also showed positive changes, felt happier and experienced better behaviour after only 10-15 minute massage.
Other studies have shown bi-weekly regular massage therapy benefits young ADHD sufferers. For treating ADHD, a non-medication therapy such as massage therapy has been found effective. In a most recent study, ADHD adolescents who took ten massage treatment classes for two weeks rated themselves as more content than those in comparison who participated in recreation therapy.
Before you stretch, massage can help to loosen the muscles without putting any strain on other soft tissues. If you go into a workout with soreness, your tight muscles create resistance that makes your limbs feel heavier. Massage can release the tension. The effects of the kneading and stroking movements to the muscle fibres help disperse/remove lactic acid build up reducing fatigue, discomfort and reducing recovery time.
Also try foam-rolling your quads before your next workout. Lie face down and place the roller just above the knee cap. Let your body sink down and roll up two inches, then down one inch. Continue slowly until you reach your hip. Then turn over and repeat on your back, moving from the waist to the shoulders.
If you spend most of your days on a keyboard or texting up a storm, your forearms (home to the muscles that control your hands) could probably benefit from some TLC – especially if the muscles feel tight and ropey, which is a sign that blood flow isn’t ideal.
Your body constantly pumps blood to and from the heart to carry oxygen to your tissues and sweeps away cellular waste products. Swedish massage is designed to push blood from your limbs towards your heart to make things a little easier. This gives your muscles a chance to relax. So you feel refreshed when your massage is over – kind of like you just took a nap but obviously better.
Massage increases and improves circulation. And circulation has to do with pretty much everything else going on with your body. The gentle stroking and kneading movements over the skin can improve the flow of blood circulation peripherally, bringing fresh blood to the area providing better local nutrition and hastening the removal of toxins and waste matter.
Muscle tension which could be due to a postural issue (sitting at a desk for long hours) can be reduced by a regular relaxation massage. Gentle but firm pressure to specific shoulder muscles for example will help disperse any tension build up/tightness in this area.
